Jono in Mexico

News from Jono Reid, our mission worker with Amor in Mexico: June 2009

Hey everyone,

So the last two weeks have been incredible.

Week 1 was all pre-field training at Point loma College in San Diego which was awesome and then for the last week I have been in Mexico building a house with my Nexus team mates. There are six of us in the program this year which is less then in previous years due to smaller numbers of people coming to Mexico to build this year because of swine flu, drug wars and stuff, but we have become very close as a group and each person has so much to offer.

We built our house in four days which I still can't quite get my head around seeing as we normally do a five day build with 15 people.  Each day we had a field specialist come and work with us so that we got a chance to get to know them as they are going to be who we primarily work with.  They are all amazing people and I am so excited to be working with them over the next two months.

I am at the Amor office in San Diego at the moment as I have my first group coming down today and I have to lead them in across the border and to camp.  I have done the lead-in route about 1000 times now so I could almost do it with my eyes closed.  I have not driven much yet but on the few times that I have I have found it so much fun driving on the wrong side of the road, it puts the challenge back into driving.

The key topic we have been discussing over the past week is the question "Why are you here?". I have thought about this a lot and the recurring thought that keeps coming to mind is that it's the only thing that makes sense.  As a lot of you would know I have struggled to figure out what I am meant to be doing in life but when ever I am in Mexico it feels like "home". I just have this overwhelming sense that what I am doing here is what God has called me to. I was talking to one of my trainers this week about the idea of doing a year-long internship with Amor and what that would look like. It is definitely something I will be thinking and praying about over the next two months.

I am so grateful for everyone's continued prayer and thank you again for everyone who helped get me here.

Something that Howie said this week I found really cool was "Share the mission and God will close the deal".  I just found it awesome that someone can live so completely on faith.

Have a good one! Talk soon.
Jono
